Summary

No matter what team you're on, whether it's in the workplace, in athletics, or even just within your family, you're either adding or subtracting value to that team. Nobody has a neutral impact, and one of the key factors that determines whether you're a team elevator (one who adds value) or a devastator (one who diminishes value), is whether or not you're selfless or selfish. In this episode Dave compares and contrasts selfless and selfish tendencies so that you can determine where you stand and make adjustments to become or stay a team elevator, and add value to those around you.

Welcome to Game Change Your Life. I'm Dave Anderson. And this episode, I want to talk about the topic.

0:34.1

Are you a team elevator or devastator? You've heard me say in the past probably that no one

0:41.4

has a neutral impact on the team, whether you're in business, military, sports, doesn't really

0:46.7

matter, nonprofits. You don't have a neutral impact on the team. No one does. In some, even in a small

0:52.4

way, you're either adding value to it or taking value away or subtracting it. And so I think one of the key differentiators that determines whether you are an elevator, someone who brings things up or a devastator, someone who brings things down, is the difference between whether you are selfish or selfless. And I really want to talk about the

1:11.9

difference between the two in this episode, selfish, which has an eye in it, appropriately,

1:19.0

or selfless. Now, selfishness, you look it up in the dictionary, it talks about it's the quality

1:26.2

or the lack of concern or consideration for

1:29.8

other people. You put your own welfare before others. Selfless, on the other hand, you're concerned

1:35.9

more with the needs and wishes of others than with one's own. In other words, you subordinate

1:41.7

your own feelings, your own welfare, your own agenda where necessary

1:46.4

because it's best for the team overall.

1:49.4

And you put the team first, whether it's your family.

1:51.9

Your family's a team.

1:53.3

You know, some people are very selfish as parents, very selfish as spouses, or of course,

1:58.0

as kids too.

1:58.8

It works that way as well.

2:00.0

But you're putting your own comfort, your own preferences, as kids, too. It works that way as well. But you're putting your own

2:01.3

comfort, your own preferences, your own ego aside to do what's best for the unit overall. And that's

2:10.5

really, that builds up the team. And you make it all about you. If it's always about you,
