This week, we talk about a show, a couple shows back, 1402 monuments and we respond to some of the responses we got from that show.

We got some great correspondence, very helpful, very thoughtful, challenging, sometimes critical,

perfect.

It was exactly what you want.

I mean, what could be better than a public radio show

inspiring a kind of thoughtful conversation

where people take 15 minutes or even an hour or more to write a response

laying out their own views of things, sometimes passionate, sometimes not.

This is exactly what you want, a public humanities program like this to generate and I'm just

thankful and grateful to everyone especially those who showed civility which is most but even those who didn't and so that's that's what the show is about we read

some of the letters not all of them and we try to formulate a more careful

analysis of the place of our public monuments on public

pedestals to American memory and not without concluding anything finally of

course David but but certainly an attempt to to provide greater

nuance and clarity to this perplexing subject that's kind of racking American life

right now. Well we want to get to the show right away, but before we do that, there were a couple of things
