So the scenes in Kabul have really shocked the world and even Western governments have been taken by surprise by the speed at which the Afghan

forces and Afghan government fell and again the speed with which the Taliban have taken over.

I mean, Tom, what have you made of this kind of past week or so of events?

Well I think it's been really striking especially the response from Western Powers

who started this mess to begin with. I mean it started off with the utter betrayal really of the people in Afghanistan who took the west at their

word and took part in this project of trying to build this state, not just the people who worked as interpreters or were in the security forces or helped the Western forces, etc.
