For now, though, without further ado, let's go on to the history.

Last time out, we talked about marriage in the Viking Age and explored the role that marriage

and, more importantly, than negotiations which led up to it,

may have played in inspiring young Norwegian farmers to go a Viking, starting around the early 800s.

Today, we are going to once again follow these Norwegian farmers as they journey west to Ireland.

We will see how in the years following

the initial raids on Ireland and Iona, the number and variety of Viking activities on Irish

shores just began to steadily escalate and the impact that this escalation had on the island's

inhabitants.

Now, when we last heard from our Irish friends, they were enjoying a relative respite from the initial raids of 795 and 798.
