Summary

The UK’s favourite fitness coach is back with series two of his podcast. This summer, Joe is speaking to inspirational friends and some of his favourite people to ask them what single thing they do to keep themselves feeling mentally and physically strong in the face of life’s little challenges. It might be going for a new personal best on the running machine, or cosying up with a good book; every guest will share the one thing that works for them in the hope it might inspire you to try something new. In this episode Joe speaks to artist Charlie Mackesy, author of The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse. Charlie's best-selling book has sold more than 3.3 million copies worldwide to date, and his illustrations struck a chord with people of all ages during the 2020 lockdown, including Joe and his daughter Indie. Charlie joins Joe from the barn in Suffolk where he has been working on new illustrations over the last year. They discuss Charlie's very personal inspiration for his art and the emotional impact of his book on his readers; from school children to soldiers. And when he's taking a break from the easel, Charlie tells Joe he finds solace in exercising in nature. This is sunshine in a podcast. Joe Wicks is here for you, and he won’t stop until you’re fit and happy. Producer: Clare Salisbury Editor: Dimitri Houtart A BBC Audio Bristol production for Radio 4

This week, I'm speaking to one of my favourite authors and illustrators, the amazing Charlie

Makasey. You'll probably know him as the man behind the boy, the mole, the fox and the

even dreamt up those characters. It's a book which means so much to me and I know

Charlie's stories were really important to so many of you during lockdown. Some of our

Charlie's warmth and generosity really shone through and I really hope you enjoy this chat

as much as I did. So here we go. Charlie, I have been so excited to speak to you. I can

1:12.0

finally put a face to the name of the most wonderful book that I've been reading to my

1:16.0

little daughter and my little son Marley for the past year now. It's incredible. So thank

1:20.0

you for your time and firstly, it looks like you're living in an amazing barn somewhere

1:24.1

and I can see some gymnastics rings hanging from the ceiling. Are you into your calisthenics?

1:28.4

Can you see them? I thought they were. Have you seen them hanging up?

1:31.1

Yeah, they're right by my desk. Okay, so I'm really bad at organised exercise, like terrible.

1:37.5

So I can never actually, but I kind of do it randomly when I feel like, so if I have things near

1:43.2

me, I'll do them while I'm doing other things. So if I get bored of drawing, I'll just take

two steps to the left and then just thank from the rings. It's amazing. So what are you doing?

1:59.6

Pull ups and stuff. I'll just hang or go upside down or nothing. I'm a great believer in

like something's better than nothing. I used to think that, you know, I work out how to be
