Matthew 10: 37-42 - 'Anyone who loses his life for my sake will find it.'

- 2232 (in 'The Family and the Kingdom') - Family ties are important but not absolute. Just as the child grows to maturity and human and spiritual autonomy, so his unique vocation which comes from God asserts itself more clearly and forcefully. Parents should respect this call and encourage their children to follow it. They must be convinced that the first vocation of the Christian is to follow Jesus: "He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and he who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me."

- 1506 (in 'Heal the Sick') - Christ invites his disciples to follow him by taking up their cross in their turn (abbreviated).

- 858 (in 'The Apostles' Mission') - Jesus is the Father's Emissary. From the beginning of his ministry, he "called to him those whom he desired; .... and he appointed twelve, whom also he named apostles, to be with him, and to be sent out to preach." From then on, they would also be his "emissaries" (Greek apostoloi). In them, Christ continues his own mission: "As the Father has sent me, even so I send you."The apostles' ministry is the continuation of his mission; Jesus said to the Twelve: "he who receives you receives me."

0:23.1	and I guess what the gospel authors meant as well. We're continuing today in the gospel of Matthew
0:27.9	and we're looking at Matthew chapter 10 verses 37 to 42. So here's today's reading if you go to Mass.
0:37.0	Jesus instructed the 12 as follows.
0:40.6	Anyone who prefers father or mother to me is not worthy of me.
0:45.2	Anyone who prefers son or daughter to me is not worthy of me.
0:50.9	Anyone who does not take his cross and follow in my footsteps is not worthy of me. Anyone who does not take his cross and follow in my footsteps is not worthy of me.
0:57.0	Anyone who finds his life will lose it. Anyone who loses his life for my sake will find it.
1:05.0	Anyone who welcomes you, welcomes me, and those who welcome me welcome the one who sent me.
1:13.6	Anyone who welcomes a prophet will have a prophet's reward, and anyone who welcomes a holy man
1:20.2	will have a holy man's reward. If anyone gives so much as a cup of cold water to one of
1:26.8	these little ones, because he is a disciple,

1:45.2	completely misinterpret these phrases of Jesus here. So Jesus has just been speaking to his
1:51.5	apostles about discipleship and the suffering they will face in the coming years. Just prior to this
1:58.5	in chapter 10, he said to them, do not think that I have come to bring peace
2:03.5	on the earth. I have come to not to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against
2:10.3	his father and a daughter against her mother and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.
2:15.1	So that famous passage is what Jesus has just said
