Summary

Jeff Higgins has attracted action wherever he has worked, from being involved in a shooting during training as a deputy sheriff in Hillsboro County, Florida, to opening up the first DEA office in Afghanistan to tackling a suicide bomber. He had so many stories that we decided to make this a four-part series.

Jeff is also an accomplished author. His latest book, The Forever Game, is available everywhere you buy books. Check out his website here. And if you happen to be in Alexandria, Virginia, make sure to stop by Elaine’s Restaurant.

Where's the operating plan for loading rockets into the back of a truck?

0:17.6

Yeah, we'll get to it when we got time.

0:19.2

Yeah, you know, yeah, well, you know, I did a lot of operational plans after after we

0:24.3

They call that ex post facto planning it's always successful that way too by the way

0:29.4

plan never goes spread that way 100% success rate that way. And we had these rusted rockets,

0:34.7

so 107 millimeter Chinese rockets. I remember these banging around in the back of our

0:38.6

pickup truck and we brought him back and seized them and then we had our

0:41.7

source tell the guy that they've been stolen and you know and then we started

0:45.1

building a case you know we ordered opium to start and the guy went to a bizarre the

0:49.8

chapar-har bazaar with our source and you know negotiating we had it we had a camera by the

0:54.7

way like just this was early days too a lot of the equipment that I had was stuff I

0:59.5

sent a source in a Pakistan to buy it baza. So like I was literally using like little

1:03.9

concealed cameras I bought with my own money at a bazaar in Pakistan, you know, but

1:07.8

we wired into his clothing and we so we had this guy walking around the bizarre

1:11.2

negotiating for opium with this drug trafficker and then buying

1:14.6

opium and doing an undercover deal with him. And unlike, you know, in DEA, you're not supposed to front money, but, you know, it's Afghanistan and we did that, you know, know so he give him the money that we'd wait a few days and then the drugs would come you know and you kind of keep your fingers cross because if it didn't you'd be in trouble but that's just the way they did business air you know that's they wouldn't do it another way and so we

1:34.6

bought opium then we ended up buying kilos of heroin from them this is the really

1:38.2

pure stuff and again it's like 2,500 bucks a kilo that you know ends up going

1:42.4

for I think I want to say at the time it was

1:44.4

maybe like around 80,000 in New York that it was going for and that that's at the

1:48.5

kilo price if you break it down it's like a million dollars at street value you know
