It seems only appropriate to use the language of the low countries in the week that marks

the 80th anniversary of the time those same countries were brought to their lowest

deb by the invading German troops.

In fact Sunday was the anniversary of the British Expeditionary Force Commander General

Lord Gort ordering his troops to fall back to the Shelter River.

Now if only we had one of those, you know, bookish, knowledgeable historians to hand, one

of those chaps who knows what this all means.
