Summary

On the evening of November 17th, 1973, five teenagers, enjoying a campfire at the Gitchie-Manitou State Park in Iowa, were terrorized by three sociopathic brothers, who would end up murdering the four boys in brutal fashion. The lone survivor, Sandra Cheskey, was raped and released, and not surprisingly deeply traumatized by what she'd witnessed and experienced. She would become known from that point on as the "Gitchie Girl", and shunned by classmates and her community. Ultimately she would help catch the brothers, take the witness stand and even confront one of them in prison later in her life.

My guest is Phil Hammon, who along with his wife Sandy authored the fascinating national best seller, "Gitchie Girl". Phil was also best friends with one of the murder victims, Michael Hadrath, and retells the notorious events in a compelling, personal fashion.

1:26.0	I'm very pleased to have as my guest, author Phil Hammond, who along with his wife Sandy wrote the National Best Seller Gitchie Girl about the Gitchie Manitou Quadruple Murder Case.

1:46.0	So where did the title Gitchie Girl come from?
1:50.0	Well, Eric, the lone survivor of the mass murder.
1:53.0	First of all, I have a personal connection to this mass murder.
1:56.0	My best friend was killed that night at Gitchie Manitou and all the other three boys that lost her lives were from my neighborhood and I went to school with them.
2:04.0	And Sandra Chesky, the 13 year old lone survivor of that mass murder, became known as the Gitchie Girl around the area.
2:14.0	And became kind of a derogatory nickname for her because the murder happened at Gitchie Manitou State Park in Northwest Iowa.
2:22.0	And so when everything was the dust kind of settled on everything, she was kind of known as the Gitchie Girl.
2:28.0	Interesting. And she plays a vitally important role in this book.
2:32.0	She's the lone survivor of this horrific, slotterous night.
