Summary

LuckyScent’s Steven Gontarski and Dana Buchanan are in the Perfume Room today talking hidden gems of LuckyScent, how to intuit what a client actually wants (versus what they say they want), and a retail phenomenon they refer to as 'perfume trigger words.' We of course also discuss their personal wardrobes/collections including their desert island scents, what's new and exciting them most right now, and why we need to redefine the criteria of what makes a fragrance “GOOD.”

Welcome to the perfume room. I am back. I missed you. My send-of-the-day today is a brand new purchase from my recent Portugal trip, which, by the way, I smelled so many fragrances on this trip.

0:23.1

Some of them were from Portuguese brands and some were just these like amazing, lovely

0:26.8

niche perfumes that are distributed internationally that I just hadn't smelled in the States yet.

0:32.0

So there will be more to come there.

0:34.0

I feel like I have smelled so much recently, not just on this trip, but in the last

0:37.9

few months that we are well overdue for a solo episode. So that will be in the near future.

0:43.5

Anyway, back to what I am wearing today. Today I am wearing violetta from Granado. Now, Granado, I believe,

0:51.8

is technically a Brazilian brand, but it was founded by a Portuguese

0:55.5

man in 1870, and their Lisbon storefront was one of their very first international stores.

1:01.7

Now, of course, like a month before I left for this vacation, they happened to open a store

1:05.8

in New York City on Madison Avenue, so I know this is an experience that I could totally

1:09.8

have at home in New York,

1:11.6

but it did feel like a fun little Portugal discovery. And violetta is delightful. It's an ode

1:17.5

cologne, so it's very light. And on first spray, there's like a distinct sort of chalkiness

1:21.9

that accompanies the violet that immediately I was like, there is definitely some iris in here.

1:27.2

It's such an angelic sort of like violet iris.

1:30.3

And I would say not like powdery or makeupy necessarily, but more woody.

1:36.1

I smell some dry vetiver in here.

1:38.3

I smell a bit of a watery sandalwood, maybe some cashmerean.

1:41.6

It's like gently chalky, woody, dry violet that's faintly sweet but not

1:46.7

candied, just smooth. If you enjoy perfumes like Violet Hay from Marissa Zappas or Molecule 05

1:54.2

from eccentric molecules, paper plus from commodity, or even weirdly like a really watered down
