This is a good one.

The number of the week is 135.

135 is the number of candidates that appeared on a single ballot back in 2003.

The state of California's 2003 election to recall its governor, which is a kind of election

that may happen again this year.

Quick review for those who have not been paying wrapped attention to California politics,

opponents of Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, have been trying for a while now to trigger

an election to recall him.

To do that, according to state law, they must first gather at least $1,495,709 valid signatures.

That is a very specific number.

The reason is that California's recall law says the number of signatures must be 12%

of the total vote from the last governor's election.

Okay, so folks behind the recall have until March 17th to try to do that and hit that

about 1.5 million signature threshold.

Now folks have tried before to trigger this whole process and fall short.

But this time, Gavin Newsom may be in actual trouble.

His political opponents say they're getting pretty close to their signature goal.

And one reason that there might be some juice behind this particular effort at this particular

moment is that Newsom has taken a lot of heat for his handling of the COVID crisis
