| 0:33.4 | You used to be part of the Soviet Union. |
| 0:35.0 | It was sort of the bread basket of the Soviet Union and it lies physically, strategically |
| 0:43.0 | located between Europe and Russia. |
| 0:47.2 | And so it is still important today because oil pipelines run from Russia through Ukraine |
| 0:54.9 | into Europe and oil is the source of Russia's geopolitical power right now. |
| 1:00.6 | So Ukraine, as part of that system, is still vital. |
| 1:05.0 | Now Eastern Ukraine, which is physically closer to Russia, as well as Crimea, which sort |
| 1:11.0 | of hangs off the southern side, those regions are generally more pro-Russia. |
| 1:17.1 | The people who live there are actually more pro-Russia. |
| 1:21.0 | Whereas the areas in Western Ukraine are generally more pro-Europe, just the sentiments of |
| 1:26.8 | the people who live in those areas. |
| 1:29.0 | I mean, Americans should have some familiarity with politics breaking down regionally like |
| 1:34.8 | that. |
| 1:36.2 | So the last decade or more has been a tumultuous time for Ukraine. |
| 1:42.2 | They've sort of teeter-toddred between pro-Europe and pro-Russia presidents. |
