What are those things and what's the relationship of natural law to the basic laws that we all live with every day and the US Constitution?

Hadley Arcus, he's Professor Emeritus of Juris Prudence at Amherst College.

He's founder of the James Wilson Institute on Natural Rights and the American Founding.

He's architect of the Bill that became the Board of Live Infants Protection Act,

and he's author of several books including his latest Mirror Natural Law, Originalism, and the Anchoring Truths of the Constitution.

It's good to be here Todd, thanks so much for having me on.

You say that natural law has always been with us, what do you mean by that?

It's a law that tells you why you are justified in having laws,

and it's a law that tells you what a law is in the first place.

Manuel Kant used to say before we have any kind of positive law, the law that's enacted regulations put in place.

Before you have, say, faith laws, sign saying, 65 miles per hour, 35 miles per hour.

Before you have that positive law, there's an underlying natural law that tells you why you're justified in having a law,
