Summary

In previous episodes 77 and 55 we looked at foreign troops serving in the German army during WWII, in this episode we're going to be discussing the Georgians who came over from the Russian army to fight with the Wehrmacht. A large number of these men would eventually be posted to the Dutch island of Texel to man the Atlantic war. When the war in Europe ended on the 7th May 1945 the fighting on Texel would continue...

Georgians. I was going to ask how did they end up fighting with the Germans during

World War II but it's it's sort of much more complicated than that the Georgians have a history with the Germans

don't they they cited with them during the First World War why?

Georgia at the time the First World War was part of Russia as part of the Russian

Empire. They were Georgian nationalists who would have liked to have left, but basically Georgia was a, you know, just a province in the Russian Empire.

But when the war ended for the Russians, basically with the Bolshevik seizure of power and Lenin's proclamation of peace,

everything began to fall apart on the margins. Ukraine fell into the hands of the

Germans very quickly. The Turks had a border with Russia, the border was in Georgia.

So the Turkish army was advancing very rapidly and so they were battling the Russians there.
