Summary

Host Reed Galen is joined by Lincoln Project Senior Advisors Trygve Olson and Jeff Timmer for the conclusion to their in-depth conversation about the 2022 midterm elections. To start, the panel gives their criteria for how they score the upcoming 2022 elections and the unique decision to score them not on a scale of “Democrat to Republican” but rather on a scale of “Democracy to Autocracy”. Then, they do a deep dive into the races in the 4 most important states for the future of American democracy…also known as…the “WAMP” states (Wisconsin, Arizona, Michigan, and Pennsylvania). Plus, analysis into the upcoming races in Nevada, New Hampshire, Ohio, Virginia, Alaska, and more.

1:04.5

All right, so guys, let's turn, you know, specific to some of these places.

1:07.5

So let's talk about how you rated these races, how you scored them.

1:11.5

And as you guys were talking about at the beginning, scoring the election itself, not necessarily a particular office or race.

1:17.5

So, Trickviel, just give us a little insight into the brain power here.

1:21.5

Yeah, so the idea of looking at things election by election, primaries, generals, all of them is just election.

1:27.5

I got to give Tim a credit for that. We were on a call and we were throwing around trying to look at it in a traditional way.

1:33.5

And Timmer's like, why aren't we just looking at these as elections, regardless of office?

1:37.5

Because we were like, where is the secretary of state of Michigan's race fit into this?

1:41.5

So that part was kind of genius. And then as I was kind of working through it, I was like, all right, well, we should score these based on how, you know, what are the important factors that we're looking at?

1:50.5

And so the process of this, and I think Timmer and I were channeling our best NFL GMs during the course of draft week, it was kind of like that.

2:02.5

I mean, we basically compiled as much information as we could on all of these elections.

2:07.5

And we basically just started walking through race by race by race and talking about them and saying, all right, how important is this to 2024?
