Amy Morin @amymorinauthor

I started my career as a psychotherapist thinking I’d use what I’d learned in college to teach people how to be mentally strong. I never imagined how much I was going to need to build my own mental muscles. When I was 23, my mother passed away. When I was 26, my husband passed away. Losing the two most important people in my life made my interest in mental strength personal. With a broken heart, I began studying people. I wanted to know why some people felt stuck after they went through hard times and why other people emerged from hardship feeling stronger than ever. As I studied mental strength, I realized that mentally strong people didn’t just have good habits. They also avoided any unhealthy habits that could hold them back. In 2013, during one of my lowest points in my life, I wrote a letter to myself about all the things mentally strong people don’t do. When I was done, I had a list of 13 things that could rob me of mental strength if I let them. I found comfort in reading that letter. So a few days later, I published it online. I hoped someone else might find it helpful too. I never imagined it would resonate with so many people—but that letter was read by more than 50 million people. Within a matter of days, a literary agent called and suggested I write a book. And my life has never been the same.
