Summary

Listeners keep saying that the title is wrong, that everyone asked Des and Kara to start a podcast. That may or may not be true, but one thing that is definitely true: USATF and World Athletics didn't ask for this episode. They won't be listening even if they should. In it, Des and Kara talk about the state of the sport and how to draw in more fans.

From small crowds and missing stars at the recent LA Grand Prix to confusing Olympic Qualifying standards and the highly inflated USATF CEO salary, they talk in depth about the challenges for the sport and then give ideas for growing it.

As a bonus, you get their live reaction to learning of Faith Kipyegon's new 1500m world record and a classic Kara "rant" at the end that you won't want to miss. Someone put these two in charge!

Hello and welcome to Nobody Asked Us presented by DCS. This is Cara Goucher and I'm joined

0:16.8

by Des Linden. Des, how you doing? I'm doing great. That was such an enthusiastic

0:22.9

intro. I loved it. Crushed it. Getting better every time we step up to the plate. This

0:28.6

is getting better. I mean, I feel like we know what we're doing almost. Almost. Almost.

0:33.2

Yeah. Almost. Well, today we want to talk about the state of track and field. But first,

0:37.9

I know everybody wants to know, how is your hand? It's good. It's hanging on, if you will.

0:46.3

No, the stitches are out. The scars, it's pretty, I think it's gross, but I think it probably looks

0:52.9

pretty normal now. Yeah, right? And the full, mostly full range of motion. I gotta work on my

1:00.5

thumb. I'm just going to use this as an excuse for bad hair days because when I tie my hair,

1:06.1

I can't really use the rubber band that well. So do you have any pain in that hand when you're

1:11.3

moving it? Not really. There's a little bit when I'm flexing the thumb outwards.

1:19.7

I don't know. It's fine. Like, it's fine. It's like, look at the range of motion. That's the,

1:27.5

we'll have to get the thumb to be able to move a little bit better. I can't believe how quickly

1:31.6

that healed up. Yeah. Well, it's been about a month. Well, it doesn't seem like that long. But

1:36.1

also, okay, I need to know when they were taking the stitches out. Was it like pinchy? Was it pulling?

1:41.5

Yes. That was, that's actually a funny story because I went in and it was this very young girl

1:46.8

and I took off the bandage. She's like, we're taking some stitches out today. I took off the bandage

1:50.5

and she looked at it. She's like, oh, like great. She's like, I usually only see like four or five

1:56.8

stitches. I'll be right back. I was like, oh, no. She's like, I've never seen these type of

2:01.9

sutures before. And I usually only do a couple at a time. So she didn't leave a lot of confidence

2:08.0

with me as I was sitting there. And then she's taking about, she's like, yeah, sometimes like,

2:13.0

it starts to grow to the, the skin starts to attach to the suture and like, it can kind of hurt.
