Hello, I'm Sean Curran, and this is today in Parliament from BBC Radio 4 for Monday, the 13th of April,

when, as American warships began to block Iranian ports, the Prime Minister said the UK would stay out of the war.

We, the UK, will not be joining the blockade that the President announced.

Kemi Bey did not call on the government to do more to help people with the cost of living.

We must take rapid action to increase our energy security and keep bills down, not just until

July, but longer than that, permanently.

Also tonight, the Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood says the inquiry into the Southport murders

has revealed systemic failings.

We must ensure we do not find ourselves here again.

Grieving deaths which should never have happened had the state

and those who worked within it acted differently.

But first, the US naval blockade of Iranian ports

began just half an hour before Sarkir Stama arrived in the Commons to update MPs about the

situation in the Middle East. The Prime Minister said Iran couldn't be allowed to hold the world's

economy to ransom by blocking ships from passing through the Strait of Homoos.

The impact of Iran's behaviour in the strait is causing untold economic damage.

It's visible on every petrol court in the country.

My guide from the start of this conflict has always been our national interest.

That's why we stayed out of the war and why we continue to stay out of the war.
