I’m sure you’re like me and the last couple of weeks have turned your world upside down. I’ve heard from a lot of you that you’re thinking about your garden a little differently this year. So I had the opportunity to visit with my friends Melissa K Norris of Pioneering Today and Kevin Espiritu of Epic Gardening about the crops we would grow in a preparedness garden. Has the way that you are approaching your garden this year changed within the last couple of weeks?

0:06.9

Like you, it seemed like life changed on a dime, literally overnight, as the coronavirus spread across the U.S. where I live and also all over the world.

0:19.7

And with that, I have found a lot of people asking a lot more questions

0:24.2

about gardening, and rightfully so. When it's really hard to get canned vegetables right now,

0:30.6

you do have to wonder how can you start or expand your garden in a way that makes it where you know you're going to have food later.

0:39.6

Now, obviously, we hope that this is actually not going to be a long-term issue.

0:44.7

But many of you guys are preparing just in case, and I don't think that's a bad idea.

0:50.7

Whether you're starting your first garden this season, or you are expanding your garden, or maybe

0:56.7

you're changing up what you're going to grow based on the current climate.

1:00.3

I wanted to bring you a conversation that would give you tools to know how to do that well.

1:06.3

In today's special episode, I'm bringing along on the podcast two friends that I've met in the

1:12.1

gardening space that you'll recognize because they've both been on the podcast multiple

1:16.6

times. Kevin Espiritu from Epic Gardening and Melissa K. Norris from Melissa K.Norris.com in

1:23.7

pioneering today. Both of them have unique takes when it comes to what we're dealing with

1:29.9

right now and what we need to do in our gardens as a result of the current situation. We're going to

1:37.1

be talking about the top three crops each of us would plant if we could only plant three in our

1:43.1

gardens. This was so much fun and I think you're

1:46.0

going to be surprised at the answers you hear. We are truly living in a unique time and hopefully

1:52.4

after this conversation with Kevin and Melissa, you'll be better equipped to make the most of it.

2:00.8

Hi, I'm Jill and in 2013 I started my first garden, having no background, knowledge, or experience whatsoever.

2:07.6

Now I am embarking on my eighth season of growing my own vegetables, fruits, and herbs,

2:12.6

and I'm proof that you don't have to have decades of experience to grow your own garden,
