I grew up in Arizona. My father is a big-time gardener and he planted when I was

younger a massively long row of blackberry bushes.

These blackberries are delicious and I hated them.

In August is when they would all be ready to harvest and my dad would wake us up on

Saturday because he would not be working that day and he could supervise

He would tell us it's time to get the blackberries and you had these little green

baskets that we would collect from buying berries at the store, probably like half pint

baskets maybe. And our goal goal we were each assigned basically a section of

blackberry plant and you worked there they were marked with these long bricks

so you'd say you work from this brick to this brick. This is your area, pick it clean and you would pick it clean.

These blackberries were very thorny. They were vicious. So you'd wear gloves and it was unbelievably hot in August in Phoenix. We would handle the heat by being dressed up a lot so I would wear jeans, I would wear a long sleeve white shirt, I would wear a

hat, and I would soak my shirt beforehand to let that kind of keep me cool during the arduous task.

It would take us hours.

I remember one year in particular

with those little green baskets.

We pulled off, I think about 160 baskets full and it was an impressive hall. The work didn't

end once we harvested the blackberries because then we had to make blackberry

We all hated it and complained and wind the entire time, but he forced us to keep doing him.
