Summary

In January of 1999, 30 year old Belinda Temple, who was eight months pregnant, was found shot to death in her closet in Katy, Texas. Her husband, David Temple, was the obvious first suspect. But there wasn’t much evidence to connect him to the murder and he was seen on store cameras during the suspected time of the murder. But he had the oldest motive in the world. And Harris County DA’s Office would take almost five years to finally bring charges against him. The complicated legal wranglings and clash of two courtroom titans made this case a national sensation. And sometimes the very real woman, Belinda Temple, and her unborn daughter, Erin, are forgotten in the sensationalism. This is part 1 of 2 episodes.

The phrase, it's always the husband, is a popular trope in true crime. I've got an episode named that, the case of Michael Morton, who is actually

0:22.8

an innocent man. You see it in memes, hear it on podcasts, and on shows like Dateline and even

0:29.0

fictional shows like Dexter. It's a trope for a reason. Studies are all over the place on percentages,

0:35.8

but for women, only about 10% are killed by strangers.

0:39.3

Of the women killed by someone they know, anywhere from 60 to 75% are killed by their husband, boyfriend, or partner.

0:46.3

And murder is the number one cause of death for pregnant women.

0:50.3

It is when a woman is most vulnerable. It's sickening to think of pregnancy as a motive,

0:57.3

but we've seen it too many times to ignore it. I've covered at least three of these murders before.

In today's episode, Belinda Temple was about three weeks away from giving birth when she was murdered.

1:10.0

The respected and beloved teacher

1:11.7

from Katie, Texas, was married to the popular football coach at another school, David Temple.

1:18.2

They seemed like a wholesome power couple, people you can look up to. But there are always secrets,

1:25.5

the dark underbelly that is the intimacy of marriage.

1:29.6

David had the age-old motive of an affair with another woman, a love triangle.

1:34.3

He was obviously the first suspect, but he wasn't the only one.

1:38.9

He was just the one the Harris County prosecutor decided to focus on.

1:43.1

This is a complicated case.

1:45.5

The attorneys involved are famous, legendary even,

1:48.5

and the legal wranglings in this case are too much to cover in one episode.

1:53.4

So this is part one of the Belinda Temple murder case, the husband, David Temple.
