So you moved to Vermont in the early 1970s.

In 1973, I moved to way up in the northeast kingdom of Vermont.

It was a real back to the land thing. I moved there. People say, why did you go there?

It was the place, one of the places in the whole northeast with some of the cheapest land. It's the poorest, coldest part of Vermont and

maybe for that reason arguably the most beautiful part of Vermont and it still sort of is in some ways.

but I was inspired by Helen and Scott Nearing

who were old communists back to,

they were back to the land people in the 30s.

Scott had been, he was at the, he was teaching at the Wharton

School at the University of Pennsylvania and this was just before World War I and he spoke

out against child labor in those days before there were any child

labor laws and in fact that got him fired and it turned into a communist for life.

So at one point he married Helen and they were in New York City and they bailed and went to

southern Vermont to live a purer life and they lived that purer life for a couple of decades and
