Summary

Pascale Wright joins me today to share a very vulnerable story from her childhood. The temptation is to view her story as one of neglect… but it’s not. We cover a lot of ground today, including: Pascale’s ambivalence about longing for care from her therapist and being afraid of his care at the same time, how our family of origin story plays out in the client-therapist relationship, how our family of origin story affects our relationship with God, and the mysteriousness of self-harm.

0:14.0	Hi Adam.
0:16.0	Say a little bit about where you are geographically and then a little bit about how you became interested
0:26.5	in story work in general and your story in particular.
0:31.6	Well I am in Snohomish, Washington, so Pacific Northwest.
0:38.8	I practice just a bit from Snohomish in Woodenville as a clinician.
0:44.1	About my early 30s, my mom passed away very quickly and unexpectedly and I jumped into
0:53.2	grad school kind of at the same time.
0:57.3	That was kind of the impetus for kind of a new direction and I think jumping into unpacking
1:03.2	my story, I think it necessitated that my mom had died.
1:08.8	I think there was something about honor, something about, yeah, something about my family of origin
1:15.2	that I wasn't able to really tell and discover my truth of what life was like for me growing
1:22.1	up.
1:23.1	And so there was a freeing that happened alongside that was just starting a practice and realizing
1:29.2	really shortly that I've got to figure out my story if I'm going to engage other people's
1:34.2	stories.
1:35.5	And so that was the first time I actually ever jumped into counseling myself and what actually
1:44.0	started that journey of even making the appointment to begin to jump into wasn't actually
1:48.8	about my story, it was coming to a crossroads of stuckness within my marriage.
1:54.6	And we didn't jump into marriage counseling, I think it was pretty clear that I needed
