Summary

From silly phobias to real panic, fear shows up in parenting all the time. Adam, Chelsea, and Cassie talk about crowds, kids going missing for a minute, and the dread of what could happen when we’re not there. Then they walk us into Scripture—Isaiah’s “fear not,” Jesus lifting Peter out of the waves, the father begging, “help my unbelief,” and a God who literally carries His people. This one’s practical, honest, and full of grace for moms and dads who need to breathe and remember: our kids—and our hearts—are in stronger hands.Resources Mentioned:
  • Good News for Parents by Adam Griffin
  • Isaiah 41:10
  • Deuteronomy 1:31
  • Matthew 14:22–33
  • Mark 9:24 – “Help my unbelief.”
  • Luke 15 – The Father’s heart.
  • Matthew 6:25–34
  • Psalms of Lament (starter set) – Fear meets faith.
  • Job (opening)

Welcome to the Family Discipleship Podcast.

And we are now posting every other Monday all year long.

0:19.6

This is Adam Griffin, and I'm here with my co-hosts, Mrs. Cassie Bryant and Mrs. Chelsea Griffin, my wife.

0:26.3

Cassie, do you have any phobias?

0:29.7

I feel a little embarrassed because it's so irrational, but...

0:32.9

What is it?

0:33.6

We have mutual friends that can attest to this.

0:35.5

It is things sticking to my feet.

0:38.6

What do you? Whoa. Like I don't like crumbs on my feet. I don't like I if you've never noticed. Wait, is this a pet peeve or is it a phobia? This scares you. Well, I've cried before. Wow. So you tell me.

0:49.9

Go ahead and move it. You can diagnose you, right? Yeah. What does the DSFI say about that? I'm unstable. In college, I used to bread chicken with Ritz Cracker Crumbs. Sure you're college. It's delicious. And our friend, our fellow friend, Ann Lincoln was over and I was breading these chicken tenders and Ritz and the plate of Ritz Cracker Crumbs fell onto the floor on my feet. With egg yolk in it? With egg yolk and crumbs. And I instantly, like, my whole heart, I like, it seized. I started crying. I was shocked. She was like, what can I do to help? And, yeah, so that's one example of things on my feet. Sticky thing? You fear things sticky on your feet. If I walked from right here to y'all's front door barefoot, it would take courage. Really? No. No, it's more like I just like, I don't know what I did. You don't walk barefoot anywhere? No. No, my kids will steal my shoes at my house. What about was socks, no shoes? Ooh. I mean, I could if I had to. I feel less afraid of that. This is really shocking. Cassie, this is, we've known you for a long time.

1:48.0

It is a very weird thing, I know. And you are right to fear in our house that something would become stuck to your foot. That's true. My own house. There's just a lot of dog here. And Eric sweeps almost every night and I still just like it. Yeah, because he has to. I think his wife's terrified.

2:01.9

Okay, what about you guys?

2:03.3

What are your irrational fears? No, we just wanted to talk about you. We got to get to the bottom of this. What happened when you were a kid? Oh, I don't know. I think my fears are rational. Let's hear them. Snakes. Oh, yeah. That's a big one. Now that Cassie said that, I would have never thought of this as a phobia, but you know how I feel about stickiness in general.

2:20.6

That's the first thing that's a big one. Now that Cassie said that, I would have never thought of this as a phobia, but you know how I feel about stickiness in general.

2:20.6

That's the first thing that came to mind when Cassie said that.

2:22.4

And so that doesn't have anything to do with my feet, just things sticky or becoming sticky.

2:27.5

It's very common for me to have a lot of alcohol pads from work, but in my purse so that if just anything has a sticky spot on it,

2:36.7

I will clean it immediately. If someone peels a label off something and then it's a tiny bit sticky,

2:42.1

I will, I'll be working on it until it is not sticky. Because I do not like things to be sticky.

2:46.7

The goo-gone is your friend too. Yeah, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I, too. Yeah, I mean. Remover. Yeah, whatever it takes. What about fears? Is there anything that scares you? I mean, snakes, you said. Yeah. For me, it's cockroaches, too. Oh, really? Like, do you remember the story of we have another mutual friend whose college roommate woke up screaming, holding her ear one night? Oh, I forgot about that. Was it still inner ear?
