It's finally here. If you've been listening to the Beginners Garden podcast for any length of time,

you know that this episode has been in the making for, well, about a year. I've been growing in

raised beds from about the very beginning of my garden journey. I grow both in raised beds and in the

ground, and I've used

different combinations of raised beds soils depending on what I had on hand and what I didn't

in any particular year. And I've noticed that there is a difference in the production of certain

plants based on the soil, especially when it comes to raised beds when it's in a contained

environment like that. But I didn't know for sure. What is the difference between raised bed soils?

Last year, I decided to test it. I built my own 3 by 18 raised bed and they're each

sectioned into 6 foot lengths. So basically I have 3, 3 by 6

raised beds. And I decided to test three different raised bed soil combinations, plant the exact same

plants in each of the beds and compare them. Let me tell you, the results of this experiment have been very fascinating.

Now, I'm not a soil scientist.

I can't tell you why there were certain differences in each of these soil mixes.

But what I can tell you is what I saw.

And I can give you some speculation of why I think

certain recipes performed differently than others. But keep in mind, it's all speculation. And my hope

in this episode is to just tell you what I experienced. That way, if you are going to be filling some

raised beds this summer, or if you've had problems

with some raised beds soil in the past, maybe my experience can point you in the right direction

so that you can have even more of a harvest in your raised beds this year.
