Welcome to the Lord of the Rings lore cast, the show that explores the background of

0:11.8

Tolkien's amazing world from the very beginning. This week we are taking on the situation with the trolls.

0:24.6

And of course, we're going to take a close look at all the little details here about

0:28.2

who exactly the trolls are and how Bilbo and the dwarves and Gandalf interact with them.

0:35.2

And in reading back through this chapter, some new questions have emerged in my mind.

0:40.6

And I would like you to be thinking about this as we go along.

0:44.2

Before we get into the details of the story, I want to set this up by talking about something

0:49.6

that sounds completely different than the Hobbit or Tolkien or the Lord of the Rings.

0:55.6

How many of you have played Dungeons and Dragons?

0:59.7

1:34.3

The middle three squares, as you go down, are all neutral, and the bottom three squares are all chaotic.

1:41.4

All of the squares on the left side, vertically, are good, the ones vertically in the

1:46.5

middle are neutral, and the ones vertically on the right are evil. So, for example, the top left

1:51.6

square is lawful good. The bottom right square is chaotic evil. And these combinations allow you

1:59.3

in Dungeons and Dragons to kind of figure out where your character is in regards to motivation, how they deal with laws, how they deal with putting themselves above others or others above themselves.

2:10.7

So why does this matter in this chapter about the trolls?

2:13.9

Well, I think that it's an important concept for us to look at evil creatures and

2:19.8

understand that not all evil creatures are the same. In fact, this is something that I think

2:25.4

the ancients and the people writing myths and legends understood. They gave motivation to the
