The Hello and welcome to the latest episode of Battleground with me, Patrick Bishop and Saul David.

This week we'll be looking at how Ukraine sees the year ahead, with the help of some very revealing comments made in a recent

interview by President Zelensky. We'll also be asking how it is that his arch-enemy

Vladimir Putin has been able to ride the political troubles that come in the wake of this war

and ask whether this is likely to change soon.

On the Gaza front, we'll be looking into whether the spate of flare-ups outside the immediate

battle zone are likely to lead to a wider regional conflict between Israel and Hisbalah

and trying to figure out what role Iran is playing in the war and what it hopes to achieve by its various

interventions.

But let's start off with that Zelensky interview.

He gave it to one of his favoured Western outlets, the economist, and his demeanour was rather

different from the upbeat, optimistic persona that the president has projected since the beginning,

wasn't it, Patrick? That's right, Saul. Yeah, the interview was done on a Zoom call from

the government situation room in Kiev,

and the interviewer made a considerable point about how Zelensky's whole attitude has changed.

The president is angry, they wrote. He has shed the likeness and humour about earlier meetings with him.
