0:00.0 | Hey, Prime members, you can listen to Cult Leader Early and add free on Amazon Music. Download the app today. |
0:30.0 | Hello and welcome back to Cult Leader. I'm your Cult Leader Spencer Henry and boy, too, I got a story for you guys today. We're talking about a cult. |
0:45.0 | And this is a story that I cannot believe was not turned into a movie. But before we get to any of that, let's catch up. How's it going? How's it been? |
0:54.0 | I had a dreamy day the other day. It was so nice. Okay, I slept in which if you know me, I'm usually up and going pretty early. But I slept until probably 10 in the morning, which is just wild. And then I woke up and I kept that vibe going state and bed, watched TV for hours. And it was great. |
1:15.0 | I feel like because of my job and everything, I get a ton of recommendations on what to watch documentaries to see. Have you seen this? Have you seen this? But I truly don't watch a ton of TV series ever. I watched Scandal. I feel like it was the last one that I actually watched all the way through. |
1:31.0 | But my friend Angel texted me the other night and she said, okay, you need to watch this show. It's called Cool Summer. It's on Hulu and it's so good. And Angel, I trust to the fullest extent with whatever she recommends because a long time ago, she's who introduced me to law and order SPU. She has never steered me wrong with TV recommendations. |
1:48.0 | Now it's definitely a little bit of like a teenage vibe, but it's darker than like pretty little liars or whatever. It feels more realistic. And it takes place in the 90s. So there's nostalgia. But I watched the first two episodes back to back. I was glued to the television. I think the next one comes out tomorrow or while not tomorrow now. |
2:10.0 | Tomorrow from when this episode comes out, I think, but it's I'm obsessed. I won't give anything away. But basically there's like a girl who goes missing and it's almost like a job breaker type situation. I don't know. |
2:21.0 | Watch it on Hulu. It's good. What else is going on? I don't know if I've, I don't know if I talked about it on here. I know I've posted on Instagram before, but I have this gratitude journal that I fill out every day. And sometimes when I'm like overwhelmed, I'll look back and just flip through and see what I wrote down that I was grateful for. |
2:37.0 | And so much of the past year, especially has been related to cold leader. And I just want to tell you guys how much I appreciate you your support. It really means the world to me personally this year has been a very big transition phase for me going from working full time at a corporation to full time cold leader. |
2:56.0 | It was a big shift in the midst of an already very strange time. And it's like this weird anxiety that I think comes from or comes with working for yourself by yourself. I mean, I have a team. I have Madison. But at the end of the day, I'm by myself a lot. And I think a lot of us have spent this quarantine phase in a similar position. |
3:15.0 | And it can feel really isolating and lonely. And I just want to let you guys know that you're not alone. You got a cult. Even if you just write down one thing you're grateful for every morning, I think it really can help put a positive spin on the rest of your day. That's something that's really helped me. So this has been your cult advice for the week. |
3:34.0 | But let's get to business. I also, if you want to support rate and review on iTunes, that's what helps the most. If you want to see images from today's episode, follow at Cult Leader podcast on Instagram. Now, like I was saying, we are talking about a cult today. |
3:47.0 | We haven't talked about a cult in a minute. Whenever we do, it's like, okay, yes, we are cult leader. We talk about cult here. But you know, we talk about some other stuff in between. I get a little bit of an Adolfo Castanzo type vibe from this week's story, aka our first episode ever. |
4:03.0 | Not only because of where it takes place, which is the overall vibe of the cult. But the truth is this week is much darker. Unlike cult leader Adolfo Castanzo, we don't have a lot of background on today's cult leaders. |
4:16.0 | But what we do know is that they pulled every trick in the cult book. By the end of this, I know you guys are going to be with me. You're going to make this a fucking movie. |
4:26.0 | Our story takes place in Mexico in the 1960s, and there was a lot happening at the time, especially politically. Residents throughout Mexico were, enduring an unrest, due largely to the inequality of wealth distribution amongst laborers. |
4:40.0 | A lot of innocent people were killed at the hands of the government. It was just a very chaotic time for the country to say the least. |
4:47.0 | It was a different time in society in general though. People were more vulnerable. Nothing could be solved by a quick Google search, and crimes involving scams were on the rise. |
4:57.0 | Mexico itself was pretty isolated from the US and a lot of other countries at the time, and if you weren't in the city, the isolation was even clearer, like Urba Boina, for instance. |
5:06.0 | Eging the Sierra Madras Mountains between Mexico City and the US border, in the 60s there was only about 20 families living amongst the quiet farming communal. A total population of about 50. |
5:18.0 | Life is quiet here. They worked long hard days. It was somewhat impoverished, and as far as education goes, it was simpler. |
