That was the Beach Boys, ladies and gentlemen, as you may have surmised.

I've never been a huge Beach Boys fan, but I don't remember where I got that.

It's called unreleased background vocals, some studio outtake somewhere.

But I got that. I just really love that. I love the simplicity of it,

the innocence of their voices and the harmony.

And I love how in the after the first take some guy just says, do it again.

It's like, hey Michelangelo, can you just sketch that out again?

We lost the first one. I don't know.

Beach Boys. There's some strange connection between the Beach Boys and Charles Manson and Acid.

I don't remember the details, but I think Manson dropped by the house of one of the Beach Boys at some point just to hang out, you know.

As things tended to happen back in the days before, the internet allowed us to hang out without hanging out.

But I love the simplicity of that. I talked about Henry David Thoreau in a recent podcast and his admonition to simplify, simplify,

and sometimes getting back to the very basic nothing but vocals, that's beautiful. Nothing but drumming, something where you can really see the bones.

It's like going to the desert after you've been in a jungle for a long time. You go to the desert and you can just see the skeleton of the earth. It's pretty beautiful.

I'm working on the book.

And one of the joys of working on this book is some of the quotations that I get to just drop in there like plums and a cake, you know.

And one of my favorite sources for these plums in this particular case is a book I'm sure I've mentioned here before called Don't Sleep There Are Snakes.
