| 0:28.9 | the FDA decided to allow the use of irradiation |

| 0:33.0 | microorganisms in fresh spinach and lettuce. |
| 0:35.4 | And the hope was that this would make these products |

| 0:39.5 | Now the use of ionizing radiation in the food supply |

| 0:44.1 | 60s, but the ruling reignited a debate over whether this practice is safe. Food |
| 0:50.0 | radiation has two main purposes. Number one, to reduce the risk of foodborne illness and |
| 0:55.0 | number two to retard the spoilage of fresh foods. |
| 0:58.0 | Irradiation, which is also known as ionizing radiation, |
| 1:02.0 | involves exposing foods to controlled doses of radiation, |
| 1:05.5 | from x-rays or from electron beams or gamma rays. |
| 1:09.0 | There's a couple of different ways that they can do it. |
| 1:11.2 | At very low doses, irradiation can kill insects and parasites that might be in the food. |
