Hello everyone to the podcast introduction to this week's Thomas Jefferson hour I'm

Clay Jenkins and with a slight head cold you perhaps can hear it and across from me

here in the New Enlightenment radio network bar keeping my distance separated by three cows and You know it just happened last night and I don't understand why but I'm actually this is such a great time for me

It's the new year. Yep. We're back to Jefferson 101. Oh geez, and it's so much fun. It is so much fun. We had a really you know I like I like I have to say this that's going to sound

heretical I like being out of character talking about Jefferson more than I even

like being in character being Jefferson well that makes me feel like I'm not doing a good job talking to the president.

No, it's not at all.

It's just that...

I get to say things out of character of a more analytical sort. When I'm in character character I have to be Jefferson I have to try to

espouse his way of looking at the world when I think that that the what a

humanity scholar brings to it is an understanding of that view of the world, but also

an understanding of the larger context of the world and how it's played out over history.

And so I really, all I guess I'm saying is that I really very much

enjoy Jefferson 101 we've neglected it we started it a year ago we got him

through the French Revolution.

Now finally, as 2017 begins, we have him back home.

What we didn't mention in this show was that when he got home

on the ship

23rd of November 1789 in the Hampton Roads.

Oh, the ship, no, the ship burned.

Oh, I didn't.

The ship that brought him home started on fire.
