Summary
In this episode, we delve deep into the topic of Calming Health Anxiety, responding to the surge of interest and discussions in our community. Health anxiety, often referred to as hypochondria, involves an excessive preoccupation with one's health and medical conditions, which can severely disrupt daily life. I explore the nature of this anxiety, focusing on how mistaken beliefs about our physical symptoms can spiral into panic and overwhelm. The fear that something is seriously wrong often leads to a vicious cycle of worry and avoidance, distracting us from enjoying our lives.
We discuss the crucial role that information plays in health anxiety. With the internet at our fingertips, many individuals fall into the trap of Googling symptoms, which can exacerbate feelings of fear and uncertainty. The availability of vast amounts of information can trigger mistaken beliefs, making us more susceptible to anxiety. As I recommend, taking a break from online research can be a beneficial step toward fostering peace of mind. Establishing boundaries around information consumption is key to reducing anxiety levels.
I emphasize the importance of awareness when it comes to managing health anxiety. Recognizing that the thoughts we experience are merely thoughts—not reality—is the first step in finding peace. By acknowledging these runaway thoughts without judgment, we can begin to set them aside and cultivate a clearer perspective. Techniques to ground oneself and access a more logical, wise mindset can ultimately help in containing anxious thoughts and reducing their impact.

| 0:34.0 | as together we can consider the many ways to bring your mind and body back to its |
| 0:40.5 | natural peace and calm. So let's get to today's show, calming health anxiety. Now, this has gotten |
| 0:50.4 | a lot of attention in the Facebook group lately, and that's why I decided to talk about |
| 0:55.2 | it again. We have talked about it on the show before, but it's getting a lot of press |
| 1:02.1 | lately in our group and in the emails that I received. So let's look at health anxiety. Anxiety can be revolving around. We can |
| 1:15.8 | have avoidance behaviors, of course. We can have conditioning where we become very highly |
| 1:24.5 | sensitive to any physical symptoms and feelings and going to panic about that. |
| 1:30.3 | But the biggest one with health anxiety, I believe, is mistaken beliefs. You're believing that |
| 1:38.8 | the physical symptoms that you are having are bigger than they are or that you are going to die, lose control, |
| 1:47.8 | or go insane, depending on what your symptom is. |
| 1:51.7 | And obviously, those are also symptoms of panic attacks, |
| 1:57.8 | so you can see where that health anxiety can just immediately take us down the |
| 2:03.9 | wormhole. We're just gone because we think what is happening to us is physically going to |
| 2:13.7 | kill us, hurt us, be chronic. And so how do we deal with this? Like we are preoccupied with |
| 2:22.0 | that thinking. So it's like hypochondria is what they used to call it. I don't even know if that's |
| 2:29.2 | a term that the physicians are using when people show up with this anymore. Health anxiety seems to be the term people come to me with. |
| 2:37.3 | So it is an extreme worry about medical conditions. |
| 2:42.4 | And we're preoccupied. |
