Summary

Brooklyn, N.Y., native Joe Caban knows full well what hard times look like. His dad was jailed on a murder charge when he was only 1, three of his four siblings have been shot (leaving one paralyzed), and what sometimes counted for food growing up was a pancake without syrup.
