My name is Jeff Gluck. Each week, I ask the same 12 questions to a different race car driver here on The Athletic.

And up next to start the 2022 NASCAR playoffs is Alex Bowman of Hendrick Motorsports, making his fifth straight appearance in the playoffs for Hendrick.

We recently recorded this conversation just before an approaching rainstorm at Daytona

and really enjoyed our chat.

I'm here with Alex Bowman.

Thank you for the hospitality, by the way.

We're supposed to do this outside and you graciously invited us into your home. So thanks. That is better than getting rained on

and or struck by lightning. So we're trying to avoid both of those things, primarily the latter of the

two. Yeah, there's a list of things that are not so great, and that's kind of high up the lightning part.

Yeah, I mean, the way my summer's gone, it would just kind of high up the lightning part so yeah i mean the way

my summer's gone it would just kind of be par for the course so um yeah definitely i'd be on top of the

news i'd be like able to tweet it out right away oh man you yeah you'd have a front row seat to it

you would know what was actually happening if i still was able to yeah you didn't get struck

too right right yeah it would be dependent on the destruction the lightning cause good point good point

all right so the first question is how do you feel about people reclining their seats on airplanes

see I don't like to do it because I don't want to be that guy but at the same time

like it really doesn't bother me if somebody does it in front of me um so yeah it's not the

worst thing i feel like it's not the best thing either i'm pretty fortunate though like i don't

obviously i don't fly commercial very often.
