Russian opposition leader Alexi Navalny cracked some jokes with a judge about running out of money in his court appearance

via video yesterday, just hours before his reported death.

Russian prison officials announced today he died while in custody. International condolences and

condemnation have been rolling in since, but his lawyer and family have not

confirmed his death yet. Navalny's mother says she'd seen him just this week and he was quote alive, healthy, and cheerful.

The 47-year-old has long been a thorn in the side of Russian President Vladimir Putin,

organizing some of the biggest anti-government protests seen in recent years.

He was sentenced to 19 years in prison in August on several charges that he denied.

CNN's Matthew Chance says Russian officials claim they tried to save him only.

They're saying that ambulance crews, when they were called to the prison, tried to revive him

for an hour but were unsuccessful.
