Hello from CNN, I'm Chris Debeau with the five things you need to know for Wednesday, October 18th.

President Joe Biden was in Israel on a short but extremely high stakes visit,

as the region is gripped by violence and

tragedy in the aftermath of Hamas's terror attacks and Israel's response to them.

In an address Biden said the US won't stand by and do nothing about the Hamas attacks that Israel says have killed more

than 1400 people, including 31 Americans.

The President said there's no higher priority for him than the release and safe return of

all hostages being held by Hamas in Gaza.

The vast majority of Palestinians are not Hamas.

The United States unequivocally stands for the protection of civilian life during conflict. He also said Israel agreed. quivoc

he also said Israel agreed to allow humanitarian aid to cross from Egypt to civilians in Gaza

who are in dire need of food, water, medicine, and shelter.

He cautioned Israelis that while they may feel rage,

they should not be consumed by it.
