Summary

The trans population in the US has been a hotly debated topic the last few years. Fundamentalists believe that this group of people is a symptom of some kind of moral failing in the US, even though trans people have existed as long as we have had human history. The conservative movement acts as if about 1% of the population is somehow "the problem", with over 700 anti trans laws proposed or passed since 2021.

But so few people have even met a trans person to have these kind of opinions about. So why don't we ask what being trans is like?

Alyson Blake Dellinger is the lead vocalist, bassist and founding member of the band Flummox. She was raised deeply fundamentalist, in church, christian schools, and something was always just... off. Now, shes a musician, deconstructed fundamentalist, an LGBT ally and.. she's trans. And today we are going to discuss her life, her experience and what faith looks like in her shoes.

0:18.4	Now, many of you've heard me mention on the podcast or in my
0:21.5	content on Instagram that I used to be a fundamentalist, Christian nationalist. And along with that,
0:27.5	I was very anti-LGBQ. I was very homophobic, very transphobic, didn't set a lot of things I regret.
0:34.5	One story that stands out in my mind was a new friend I was finally making
0:38.4	post-college, my first real adult friend. She was great, and her brother was trans. And I said
0:44.9	something on my Facebook wall that was pretty offensive. And she messages me politely, and she tries to
0:50.1	have a conversation with me, and I am just not having it. I have drawn my line. This is what my
0:54.8	preacher told me and my dad told me. I didn't know why it was wrong. I was just told it was wrong
0:59.7	and I was trying to be the perfect Christian and she ended up blocking me as she should because I was a
1:05.2	jerk and I was talking about something I didn't understand and something that had been
1:10.3	indoctrinated into me from a young age,
1:12.7	and I'm very thankful to not be that person anymore.
1:15.3	And I'm hoping that as time goes on, people will take the time to learn about each other, get to know each other as humans,
1:21.7	and change the way that we have these conversations.
1:24.5	And that's part of the reason my very good friend is here with us today.
