Hey, it's me again, Kelly McEvers, co-host of the Atlas Obscura podcast.

We are on day five of our 12 Days of Wonder countdown to the holidays.

Yesterday we heard about a strange holiday drink.

Today we're going to hear about a weird way of preserving recipes by etching them into gravestones. We will also get into how honoring death with recipes can be a cathartic memorial. This one is a little emotional. Here's the story.

What is your current total count of the recipe graves you've found? At this point, there are

at least 18 recipe gravestones around the world. One of my favorites is in Nome, Alaska.

It's a cool grave just in terms of its shape, because it's like a mini obelisk.

And there are different designs and inscriptions on each side of the obelisk.

And one of those sides has a recipe for a no-bake chocolate oatmeal cookie.

And at the very bottom, it's got an engraving of a cool-wip container.

So there's a lot to love about that grave.

Yeah.

Yeah, that tub that we all know and love.

Yeah, that's right at the bottom of this obelisk.

Man, that's a real commitment.

You've got to love foolwhip, yeah.

You have got to really love Cool Whip to be like, put it on the grave, baby.

For the uninitiated, recipe graves are exactly what they sound like.

Imagine a big marble gravestone with a recipe for cookies etched into it.
