Summary

Tyler Lau, otherwise known as The Hiking Prodigy, is one of only eleven human beings on earth to complete a Calendar Year Triple Crown hike. He hiked the Appalachian Trail, the Pacific Crest Trail, and the Continental Divide Trail, roughly 8,000 miles, all in the year 2018. Join us as we walk through (ha) his entire Triple Crown hike, talking in-depth about the limits you must push your mind to when hiking the length of the United States three times in one year.  Please consider donating to Tyler's fundraiser 8,000 miles To 8,000 Smiles. Follow The Hiking Prodigy on Instagram, Facebook, and check out his website! Like what you hear? Want to talk some smack? Hello everybody. My name is Kyle O'Grady and I am a through hiker, a peak bagger, and a mediocre podcaster.

0:16.7

Today you are listening to Trail Tales, the show where I chat with other through hikers and hiking

0:22.2

enthusiasts about their experiences on the trail.

0:26.5

Now today we have an epic episode, that's right, it's epic.

0:30.5

It's my first episode with a triple crowner.

0:33.6

And now for those of you who do not know what a triple crowner is, it's basically somebody who has hiked the Appalachian Trail, the Pacific Crest Trail, and the Continental Divide Trail.

0:43.3

That's right, all three long distance trails in America for a total of around 8,000 miles.

0:49.3

Now the crazy thing about my guest this week is that he didn't just complete a normal triple crown

0:56.1

because he decided to do what is known as the calendar year triple crown, which is exactly what it sounds like.

1:03.7

That's right, he hiked all three long distance trails this past year, 2018, becoming the 11th, to my knowledge, the 11th person to do so.

1:15.3

His name is Tyler Lau.

1:17.2

He's known as the hiking prodigy on social media and on the trail.

1:21.9

And I'm just very, very grateful that he was willing to come on the show this week.

1:27.3

Not only that, but he actually

1:28.7

reached out to me asking to be a guest. I did not contact him first, which is super, super

1:35.5

amazing. Tyler, when you hear this, I've already thanked you a bunch of times, but I'm going to

1:39.9

do it one more time. Thank you so much for sharing your story. I believe this is the first

1:46.3

medium that he has done an interview on as well, which is cool. And yeah, Tyler just thank you very, very much.

1:54.2

Rather than asking a bunch of specific questions, we pretty much just went through Tyler's entire Triple Crown hike, you know,

2:02.1

trying to just cram in as many details as possible. Because of that, the episode ran a little

2:08.0

bit longer than normal, but I encourage you to listen to the whole thing because I just think

2:12.7

it's really, really good stuff. I ask him a lot about his mindset as he was just, you know, pounding out the miles.
