Good morning and welcome to Kid News. I'm Kim. Today is Thursday, December 12th, 2024. And we begin with the home of Mardi Gras cracking down on party paraphernalia. New Orleans, Louisiana is banning the release of metallic balloons as city officials say wayward clusters of mylar balloons triggered a widespread power outage over the summer after coming in contact with the power line.

According to CNN, that led to the city's water pumps malfunctioning, affecting the whole sewer system and water supply.

One balloon supplier says she supports the ban, but argues the city should focus more on upgrading its outdated infrastructure.

Other states are looking at similar bans on releasing all kinds of balloons.

The Associated Students for the University of Nebraska has opposed the release of balloons at home football games

because they take too long to biodegrade

and can harm animals that come in contact with the discarded remnants.

From Judge to Juliet, Supreme Court Justice Katanji Brown Jackson is getting ready to perform

on Broadway. The 54-year-old Justice will appear in a

walk-on role in the Broadway musical comedy and Juliet on Saturday night in New York City.

According to the Atlantic, Justice Jackson has long hoped for this day and even wrote in her

Harvard University College application essay that she dreamed

of becoming the first black female Supreme Court justice to appear on a Broadway stage.

And Juliet is a modern musical take on William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, and includes

early 90s pop music by stars including Britney Spears, the Backstreet Boys, and Kelly Clarkson.
