And we begin with a beauty contest, like no other, because the contestants are all camels.

The annual Aldarfa Festival takes place in the desert, two hours southwest of Abu Dhabi

in the United Arab Emirates.

This event celebrates the shrinking Bedouin culture, made up of nomads or people who wander

throughout the desert.

According to a report in the New York Times, the festival has dog races, poetry readings,

along with local food, drinks, and handmade items for sale.

But the highlight is definitely the camel beauty contest.

What makes a beautiful camel?

The ideal one has long straight legs, a long neck, a well-shaped hump, pert ears, expressive

eyes, long droopy lips, along with a sleek coat and an elegant posture.

Of course, accessories are important too, including jewelry, shiny blankets, and colorful

tassels.

In recent years, over 24,000 camels from all over the Middle East have entered the contest,

which has several categories, competing for prize money equal to more than $16 million

US dollars.
