I grew up in rural Arkansas in the 90s. The house I lived in with my family was surrounded

by farmland. We had neighbors that lived about a quarter of a mile away from us on either side

of our property. Our home was about a mile outside of a small town on a heavily traveled two-lane

state highway. During the summer before 7th grade, my mother decided that I was old enough to stay

home alone and watch my younger brother while she went to work. I'm sure that not having to pay

a babysitter was the primary motivator for this decision, regardless. My brother and I were thrilled

to be able to stay home by ourselves. Being home with my nine-year-old brother was definitely

not always easy and enjoyable, but it beat having to stay with some of the terrible babysitters
