going to just let you explain what this show this week is.

This is an important one, everyone.

It's out of character.

We're talking about the protest near the Standing Rock Indian Reservation Boundary,

which is at the Cannonball River south of Mandan, North Dakota,

and as you probably know, a pipeline is scheduled to cross under the Missouri River there

just north of the reservation and the Standing Rock

Lakota, sometimes known as the Standing Rock Sioux, have begun to protest what they

take to be an arrogant disregard for the health of their water supply and a typical white

solution to a technological and geographical problem.

Indians from all over the country have gathered.

The annual Pow Wow that the United Tribes host south of Bismarck is coming up.

This has become a kind of moment that has some

echoes of wounded knee, the 1973 version that is, of the taking of Alcatraz by Native peoples in the late

1960s, other pan-Indian protests. This is something bigger than the issue that precipitated it and it's

fascinating to watch the people of North Dakota respond, the white government of

North Dakota response, the native response, a man named David Arshambault is the chairman

of the Standing Rock Sioux.

He's been working very hard to explain why the natives are protesting and why he believes this is good and wholesome and spiritually

important.

So I thought it would be useful for us, David, to talk about this issue because Jefferson

and Indians is almost an inevitable question and Jefferson in rebellion is another big part of Jefferson's view of a healthy America.
