Summary

Ryland Engelhart is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Kiss the Ground, and is the producer of Kiss The Ground the Movie on Netflix. He has spent the last 15 years as an entrepreneur and love-activist, working in hospitality and building a family business of organic plant-based restaurants called Cafe Gratitude and Gracias Madre in Southern CA.  In this episode, Ryland tells us the origins behind his business and restaurants, and the fundamental idea behind the film Kiss The Ground. The film explores the idea that by regenerating the Earth's soils we can reverse some of the effects of climate change. We also dive into some of the things we can do as consumers to contribute to a healthier future for our planet. Find Ryland on Instagram or learn more at www.kisstheground.com. I've been really thinking a lot lately and considering the relationship we have with our planet and the soil. And as I learn more and more

0:23.0

about, you know, things like our microbiome and the biome. And, you know, if you haven't listened to

0:29.9

the episode I did with Zach Bush, it was just incredible, the perspective to see how we treat our

0:35.3

planet and how there's so many microorganisms working for us and how the

earth, that the soil is getting all these things into these nutrients into the food that we grow.

1:07.6

And when we use things like glycos fade and AKA Roundup, when we use things like

1:13.6

that, we are damaging the soil that we are trying to squeeze everything we can from Mother Nature.

1:19.5

And we know in any relationship when we try to suck it dry, when we try to squeeze it, when we

1:24.8

try to take so much, we deplete it, we exhaust it, we damage it.

1:31.8

Because there's not a mutuality, there's not a, you know, the earth gives to me, I give back

1:37.2

to the earth, you know, and that's such a practice. And what I'm learning, you know, to have more

1:42.8

reverence for the planet to, I have this desire,

1:46.6

Kylie and I, to start to grow our own food.

1:50.7

You can really feel the need for us to get back into community to touch the land to experience

1:56.7

what it means to be in a dance with the earth.

2:04.3

And it gives to us in so many ways. And, you know,

2:13.7

in the most ways, we are takers. And we do everything we can to maximize production, et cetera,
