with the story of the Good Samaritan.

Welcome to the Bible Study podcast. Today we continue on in Luke 10, and we start with the story of the Good

Samaritan, which, if the story itself is not familiar, perhaps that name is familiar, because

certainly in English we use that expression, and this is where it comes from. On one occasion,

an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. Teacher, he asked, what must I do to inherit eternal life?

What is written in the law? He replied, how do you read it? He answered, love the Lord your

God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind,

and love your neighbor as yourself. You have answered correctly, Jesus replied,

do this and you will live.

But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, and who is my neighbor?

So we have this encounter that Jesus has with someone who is an expert in the law,

and they come to Jesus and they ask him this most basic of questions,

which is, what do I need to do to inherit eternal life? How do I be successful in this religious

thing? And they had an idea, this expert in the law, really already knew the answer, which was

this love, the Lord your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, with your strength, and all your mind. Now, the answer, which was this love, the Lord your God, with all your heart,

with all your soul, with your strength, and all your mind.

Now, the expert in the law is quoting from Deuteronomy 65, and he's extending it a bit.

Deuteronomy 65 reads, love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul,

and with all your strength, and the lawyer, being someone in a fairly cerebral profession, has added mind.

I think that's completely in keeping with the theme of the original verse.

And Jesus says, yes, you've answered correctly.
