Most Christians, if asked whether or not they affirm scriptures doctrine of the Trinity,

will affirm it. There are some who are very fuzzy on it that probably puts them outside

the pale of Christianity. There are some who deny it. That does put them outside the pale of

Christianity. But if asked to defend it biblically, where is it in the Bible, they might just give you

a blank look. Now, why is it when the doctrine of the Trinity isn't simply an inference from

scripture, it's explicitly taught by Jesus himself all throughout the Gospels. Welcome back to

issues, et cetera. I'm Todd Wilken. We're going to discuss the Trinity in the Bible. Dr. Karl

Beckwith joins us. He's professor of history and doctrine at Beeson Divinity School,

forthcoming professor of historical theology at Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne,

Indiana. He's author of the book The Holy Trinity in the Confessional Lutheran Dogmatic series,

and a recent column for the Concordia Theological Quarterly titled Trinity and the Bible. Dr. Beckwith

popularly often regarded as a doctrine that is in essence being read back into scripture?

Yeah. Well, that's a big question. Maybe the easiest way to put it would be to say that a

significant shift happens after the Reformation as we slowly get into the modern period of the

church. And in my reading of all of this, things continue to worsen into the 20th century. And what
