It had been nearly 15 years since King Perseus, the last of the Antigna dynasty,

had starved himself to death or languished away in an Italian prison.

Following its defeat at Hidna in 168, the Macedonian monarchy had been abolished on the orders of the Roman Senate, determined to put to an end any potential

infringement upon the peace they established in Greece. Yet while the Romans were contending with a new

war against the Carthaginians, an uprising took

place that saw a revival of the Antigonic kingship, led by a man proclaiming to be the illegitimate

son of the long-dead Perseus himself.

Widespread anti-Roman sentiments would eventually roll across Macedonia and wider Greece,

pushing the Republic to retaliate with a ferocity that would put to an end

the idea of Greek autonomy and inaugurate a new age of Roman rule. As we may recall, the end

of the Third Macedonian War witnessed a dissolution of a unified kingdom and the formation

of four independent republics based out of the cities of Pella, Thessalonica,

amphipolis, and Pelagonia. They were designed to be self-governing, but with stipulations

that seemed to have been intended to keep the regions weak and divided. Members of each district

could not enter marriage or property contracts with any parties outside of said district,

much of Perseus' previous administration had been taken to Italy, depriving the new republics of an experienced government,

and the famed silver and gold mines were shut down.

As Livy put it, Macedonia appeared to be an animal deprived of its limbs.
