Summary

One of the most common struggles for gardeners is how to deal with weeds. There are different strategies that we can try, but what really works? We may not ever have a weedless garden, but we can certainly strive for having to weed less.

I had the opportunity to talk with a renowned horticulturist, Dr. Lee Reich, about his book Weedless Gardening and he shared a few of his best tips for protecting your garden from being overcome by weeds. You may recognize Dr. Reich from my conversation with him about growing blueberries. He is a wealth of knowledge on so many topics.

0:40.0	I don't yet know which garden books are going to be under the tree, but I'm already really excited about them.
0:47.1	Last year I received several different gardening books, and I'm going to be sharing with you
0:51.7	one of my very favorite reads over last Christmas with you today.
0:57.1	And that is weedless gardening by Dr. Lee Reich.
1:01.5	You may recognize Dr. Reich because he was on the episode number 39, if I'm not mistaken,
1:07.3	when he talked all about blueberries.
1:09.8	And you're going to have to go listen to that because
1:11.1	I know a lot of you guys have told me you're interested in planting blueberries this year.
1:15.7	But today we're going to be talking about something that so many of you guys have told me
1:20.0	is an area of anxiety for you when it comes to your garden and that is how to prevent and
1:26.5	deal with weeds. So if you're thinking about the
1:30.2	title of this book, Weedless Gardening, you're probably pretty interested. How do I have a
1:36.5	weedless garden? Now, Dr. Rice doesn't say this in today's episode, but I've heard him say it before.
1:41.7	It's not that we are going to have a truly weedless garden.
1:45.6	But what if we could weed less? That's the key. The less weeding we could do, the better, right?
1:52.2	In case you aren't familiar with Dr. Reich, he has a master's degree in soil science and his
1:58.4	doctorate is in horticulture with an emphasis on fruits.
2:02.3	And we'll talk about that a little bit more toward the end of the episode.
