But before we start, I want to clarify something as this is a self-examination episode,

discussing the inner workings of the Democratic Party and progressive movement more broadly,

and people get a little prickly on this topic, to say the least.

And the last thing I want is for anyone to tune out or become irritated or distracted from what I see

as the critical issue at stake over what might just be miscommunication.

And I know a lot of people have a knee-jerk reaction against the use of the work rigged

when applied to the 2016 primary.

And that word does get used a lot in the debate in general, and today's show in particular.

But I think that it's a lot less relevant than many people seem to think,

and I want to get to a discussion about substance rather than about semantics.

And so just to start on that word, I think that honest people could disagree

about whether rigging something means that you merely tilt the outcome in one direction or another,

or whether it means that to break something is to make only one outcome a possibility,

and there's a big difference between those two.

So you can see how that would cause a lot of confusion for people discussing the 2016 primary
