Summary

Cars these days often come with mobile data connections and entertainment systems. But as we move toward autonomous vehicles and car-to-car communications, the “Internet of Cars” will be much more sophisticated and technical. While self-driving cars pose many benefits, they also raise concerns over cybersecurity and privacy. What are the risks, and how can manufacturers and regulators strike a balance that protects consumers without stifling innovation? Beau Woods, Deputy Director of the Cyber Statecraft Initiative at the Atlantic Council, joins the show to discuss.

Welcome to the Tech Policy Podcast. I'm Evan Schwarzenbber. On today's show, cybersecurity and vehicles, as we increasingly move to an autonomous vehicle world where vehicle manufacturers are putting fully internet integrated systems into cars, ranging from infotainment to basically just taking over the car and driving it

autonomously. And clearly, this involves an internet connection and the internet of things

0:27.6

we've talked about on the show, you know, connected coffee makers, connected refrigerators,

cars with 4G-LTE connections. You know, you can have a Wi-Fi hotspot in your car, but we're not,

I guess, really at the point yet where people are freaking out about the fact that their cars have

an internet connection. But what do you see as kind of the where we are and what the big

1:10.9

concerns are? Yeah, if you look at one of the big selling features, maybe two big selling

1:17.1

features of the past few years, one has been the 4GL to E Wi-Fi hotspots like you mentioned.

1:23.9

Another one is things like a backup camera in every vehicle.

1:28.4

And those two things are obviously critically dependent on connected technology.

1:33.4

One for a very clear demonstrated safety need.

1:37.3

And one is kind of an elective thing.

1:39.3

I'm told from my friends who have such things that children like to watch videos in the back

1:43.6

and they need to do streaming videos and things like that.

1:46.2

Yeah.

1:47.3

As we look out at the landscape of connected technology

and coming from the security research community,
